Environmental Education

Department Services

Environmental Education Definition for the City of Davenport Parks and Recreation:

Environmental education (EE) can have many meanings and interpretations. EE for the City of Davenport Parks and Recreation Department is the creation of educational opportunities with environmental themes for the public, school children, seniors, special populations and special interest groups using the resources of the park system. The EE program goal is to get people in the parks learning about the natural resources, so individuals can become environmental stewards in order to make well-educated decisions about their lives.

The four components to EE through active participation and passive means are:

  • Awareness - making a personal connection with the natural environment.
  • Knowledge - presentation and understanding of information about the natural world (facts and natural life processes).
  • Outdoor skills - recreational experiences such as gardening, canoeing and other activities with an outdoor theme.
  • Action skills - using the knowledge to change lifestyles through active behavior.

A variety of environmental education programs are available within the City. They include the following:
  • Credit Island Bird Watching
