Every Other Week - Recycling Collection
Recycling was changed from a weekly collection to an every other week collection in 2004. This was a major change for our program but a more cost effective way to collect recyclables.
General Guidelines:
Curbside recycling is a service provided to all city solid waste customers. It is an every other week collection according to a special recycling calendar. We collect only certain recyclable materials that are placed in recycling bins provided by the city. Place the recycling bins at your regular collection location.
Billing questions? Call the City Finance Dept. at City Hall 326-7707.
Business recyclable materials will not be collected by the city. See the Scott Area Recycling Center.
Calendar (for recycling and bulky waste): The city provides a schedule of your collection weeks in the form of a special calendar to help you remember what weeks both recycling and bulky wastes are collected. The yearly calendar is a new plastic static cling type calendar to be placed on a refrigerator or similar surface.

Cardboard boxes must be flattened and no more than 30 inches by 30 inches to fit through the truck doors. Cardboard may be laid under your recycling bin to secure it.
Recycling Tip: If you have only cardboard to recycle, set out your recycling bin too. This will help the crews see that you have recyclables and it can prevent missed pick-ups.
Collection day: Each resident has a regular day of the week that solid waste is collected. See the SW Collection Map. Don't confuse your WEEKLY garbage day (it stays the same) with your EVERY OTHER WEEK recycling and bulky waste collection. Also see Collection week, or call us if you are not sure.
Collection week: Recycling and bulky wastes are collected on the same day and that day alternates every other week. Here's how it works: Your day of the week stays the same, but it skips a week between collections. For example, if your regular collection day is Tuesday, you would set out your recyclables every other Tuesday according to the recycling calendar. You can still set out your garbage every Tuesday. The city will provide each household with a new recycling calendar every year to help you remember which week (see Calendar). You may also refer to the SW Collection Map.
Rule of Thumb for Collection Week: If you live in the northern half of the city, we collect one week and if you live in the southern half of the city, we collect the next week.
Fee: The city charges for solid waste services on your quarterly city utility bill. The city has established a new monthly solid waste fee based on the size of garbage cart that you choose. This solid waste fee pays for four collection services - garbage, bulky waste, recycling, no sticker yard waste weeks, and free bundled brush collection. The new cart fee starts July 1, 2006 and it replaces the previous fee.
Fee Schedule (list) - See our Solid Waste Fee Schedule page.
Handicapped-style recycling bins with small wheels are available by request. Call for more information.
Holidays: See Holiday Collection Schedule for changes in collection.
Lids? If you would like to have lids for your recycling bins, they can be purchased at the Public Works Center for $3.00 each (effective 1996).
Moving? Leave your bins at your old home for the next person. The recycling bins are the property of the City of Davenport.
Paper products such as newspapers, magazines, cereal boxes and other loose papers must be contained. You have two options to contain papers: 1) Place all paper products in one recycling bin 2) Place all paper products in a paper grocery sack and then place the sack in a recycling bin.
Note: Paper and recyclable containers must be kept separate.
Recyclable materials: For an explanation of what and how to prepare recyclables, see the Scott Area Recycling Center.
Recycling bins: The city provides two bins to every city refuse customer. The second recycling bin is for extra storage space for recyclables, and to replace the paper sacks that are required for separating paper from containers. Now it's easier because you can set out all of your recyclable containers in one bin and all of your paper products in the second bin. If you have only a small amount of recyclables, you can still use the paper sack method with one bin. If you need to replace a bin that's lost or stolen, please call us. The city wants you to recycle so we provide replacement bins.
Set out recycling bins at your normal collection location directly next to the curb or alley (normal collection point) and at least 4 feet away from garbage carts, mailboxes, utility poles and other obstructions. Please keep garbage, recycling and bulky waste clearly separated.
Theft: The recycling bins and the recyclable materials inside the bins are the property of the City of Davenport. It is a violation of the law to remove anything.
Note: Any materials not accepted in this program will be left in your recycling bins along with a Friendly Reminder card.
