Winter Damage at Davenport Municipal Courses

The winter of 2014 has gone down in the record books as one of the coldest in many, many years. The good news is that constant snow cover insulated much of the turf we should have full recovery in those areas. The bad news is that areas that had little snow cover were exposed to extremely low temperatures and winter kill has occurred on some tees and fairways.

To protect our greens we applied a heavy sand layer of topdressing sand as well as a preventative snow mold fungicide.  The greens are healthy and coming out of dormancy great!

The winter damage on some of our tees and fairways appears to have only occurred to perennial ryegrass.  To repair divots and damage we use a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass.  We use a mixture because ryegrass is quick to germinate and quick to mature into a playable surface. Bluegrass is slow to germinate and slow to mature.  The disadvantages of perennial ryegrass are that it is a bunch type grass with no rhizomes and it has poor winter hardiness. Extreme winters such as the one we experienced in 2014 can wipe out entire populations of perennial ryegrass.  We have already begun slit seeding damaged areas with a 70/30 mixture of bluegrass/ryegrass and hope to see new seedling growth in early May. If you have any questions about winter damage or any other concerns please contact me at bhickey@ci.davenport.ia.us.
