Signs (Temporary)

Both temporary and permanently affixed signs and banners must meet established standards before being placed. In all cases, no sign shall be placed in the City right-of-way (ROW) or on utility poles. These areas are reserved for traffic control devices only. Signs found in the City right-of-way may be removed and discarded by City staff or others from the public.

Temporary signs, including garage sale signs, real estate signs, and construction site signs are limited in size and number and must be located on property where the activity is taking place. The same rules apply to temporary business (or commercial) signs and banners and also require a permit prior to placement.

The following general guidelines apply to temporary sign placement. Signs that Do Not Require a Permit.

Garage Sale Signs (Rummage, Attic, Porch, Basement, Residential, Block)
  • Items can be from the residences' family or neighbors within one block
  • Sale duration can not exceed 72 hours
  • A maximum of 3 sales per calendar year per residence
  • One 4 square foot or less, non-illuminated sign may be placed at the location of the garage sale
  • No setback from the property line required
  • Must be removed after the sale
Real Estate Signs (private property/land sales)
  • Must be located on the property to be sold
  • Must be set back from the property line 5 ft on small lots of 2 acres or less and 15 ft on lots exceeding 2 acres
  • Must be 6 feet or less in height on small lots of 2 acres or less and less than 8 feet in height on lots exceeding 2 acres
  • One 9 square foot or less, non-illuminated sign may be placed on small lots of 2 acres or less and 32 sq feet or less on lots exceeding 2 acres
  • Must be removed after land/property sale
Construction Signs (property being developed)
  • Are defined as signs that identify the Architect, Engineer, Designer, Contractor, Developer, Lender or Future Occupant
  • An approved building permit must be active for the project
  • One 64 square foot or less, non-illuminated sign is permitted
  • Must be set back 15ft from the property line
  • Must be removed after an Occupancy Permit is issued

Temporary Business Signs and Banners
  • Must not exceed 32 square feet in size
  • Must be set back 10ft from the property line
  • For signs, the permit is valid for 21 days over a 180 day permit period and for banners, the permit is valid for 81 days over a 180 day permit period
  • At conclusion of 180 days the permittee may re-apply for another permit
  • Must be removed at the conclusion of the permit
