Contractor Licensing & Qualfications

Licensing
Work regulated by city ordinance must be performed by or under the direct supervision of an individual licensed as a contractor. 

Licenses are issued to individuals only, who may then secure permits and supervise work for a company or corporation. Plumbing and electrical work shall be performed by or under the direct supervision of an individual licensed as a journeyman who is employed by the licensed contractor. Plumbing apprentices or helpers are required to register with the city.

All applicants for license must meet minimum qualifications for training and experience and standardized testing.

General Contractor/Specialty License
  • Commercial, $300
  • Home Builder, $200
  • Sub-Specialty, $100
Contractor License
  • Electrical $200, Journeyman $50
  • HVAC $200
  • Plumbing $200, Journeyman $50, Apprentice Registration $10
Qualifications and Testing
Applicants for contractor licenses must meet the minimum qualifications for training and experience for each license category licensing is being sought for.  Qualified applicants are required to demonstrate their capabilities by standardized testing.

General Contractor
Approved testing exam sites for general contractors can be found at the International Code Council website and at Prometric. All general building license candidates must receive a passing score of 70% before a license will be issued. Required education, training and experience must be documented in writing and submitted with the license application form to the Building division to obtain an Examination Registration form.

Plumbing, HVAC and Electrical
All plumbing, HVAC and electrical license candidates must provide proof of licensing with the State of Iowa to be considered for a license with the City of Davenport.  Required education, training and experience must be documented in writing and submitted with the license application form to the Building Division along with a copy of State of Iowa licensing.

Bonding
A surety bond is required for all licensed contractors. A checklist and form can be found at this link.
