Davenport Fire Department logoThe City Council learned Tuesday that the City’s Public Protection Classification dropped and is expected to benefit commercial property owners starting next year.

Davenport’s PPC score dropped to 2 from 3 on a scale of one to 10.

“Just to clarify, just like in golf, a lower score is better,” Davenport Fire Interim Chief Jim Bickford wrote in an email to Mayor Frank Klipsch and City Administrator Corri Spiegel. On the scale of one to 10, Class 1 represents exemplary public protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire-suppression program doesn't meet ISO's minimum criteria.

The rating will go into effect starting Feb. 1, 2018 and “will likely lower insurance premiums for many commercial properties within our community,” according to Bickford’s email.

Bickford praised the effort by the department’s accreditation team of District Chief Carlsten, Lieutenants Andrew Burken and Aaron Mack, Engineer Jake Hebbeln and Firefighter Brian Klinkenberg in lowering the PPC rating.

The PPC scores are issued by the Insurance Services Office Inc. (ISO), from data collected on municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. A community's investment in fire mitigation is a proven and reliable predicator of future fire losses, so insurance companies use PPC information to help establish fair premiums for fire insurance — generally offering lower premiums in communities with better protection, according to the ISO website.
