Compost Facility

Interested in learning more about how Davenport produces mulch, compost and other soil amendment products?

  • Register to attend one of our Community Tours at this link, or
  • Request a tour of the Davenport Compost Facility by e-mailing us or by calling us at 563.328.7225. Our minimum tour group size is 5 people, maximum tour group size is 20. Call us for groups larger than 20 people; we may be able to accommodate. Please note we may not be able to honor all tour requests based on staffing and service level needs.

What you need to know about touring the Davenport Compost Facility:

  • Tours are offered by appointment 7am to 3pm, Monday through Friday, except Holidays.
  • Facility tours are free.
  • Tours last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Expect to walk, and to be outdoors. Dress for the weather. Tours on extremely inclement weather days may be cancelled.
  • Conditions can be a little dirty and dusty. Wear clothing and footwear that can be cleaned. For safety, do not wear open toed shoes.
  • Compost Operations is a little noisy. We offer listening devices to ensure tour participants can enjoy learning more about our facility and our processes.
  • Due to the processes and equipment at the Compost Facility, this tour is not suitable for children under age 8.

Consider Making a Day of It

If you are planning to register for one of our Community Tour days, consider making a day of it by touring our neighboring Wastewater Treatment Plant. Together, these facilities keep two waste streams out of the landfill by recycling wastes into  environmentally beneficial compost and soil amendment products.

Public Works Tour

Public Works is: the streets, signs and signals that aid your daily commute, the systems that collect waste from your home, the programs that protect the health and safety of our citizens and our community's environment, and the projects that maintain and allow our City to grow. Get a behind the scenes look at how we provide and maintain the city: snow room, signs, signals, fleet management and more.

  • Request a tour of the Davenport Public Works Center by e-mailing us or by calling us at 563.326.7923. Our minimum tour group size is 5 people, maximum tour group size is 15. Call us for groups larger than 15 people; we may be able to accommodate. Please note we may not be able to honor all tour requests based on staffing and service level needs.

What you need to know about touring the Davenport Public Works Center:

  • Tours are offered by appointment between 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, except Holidays.
  • Facility tours are free.
  • Tours last approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on questions and content.
  • Expect to walk; our facility is over 150,000 sq ft.
  • Part of this tour is in an industrial type of environment. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear that can be cleaned. For safety, do not wear open toed shoes.
  • Our equipment bays are not heated/cooled, dress for weather.

If you are planning to register for one of our Community Tour days, consider making a day of it by touring one of our partner agency’s nearby facilities, the Waste Commission of Scott County’s Recycling Center.

  • Request a tour of our Wastewater Treatment Plant by e-mailing us or by calling us at 563.326.7877. Our minimum tour group size is 5 people, maximum tour group size is 20. Call us for groups larger than 20 people; we may be able to accommodate. Please note we may not be able to honor all tour requests based on staffing and service level needs.

What you need to know about touring the Wastewater Treatment Plant:

  • Tours are offered by appointment between 8am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, except Holidays.   
  • Facility tours are free.
  • Tours last approximately 1 hour.
  • Expect to walk and to be outdoors. Dress for the weather. Tours on extremely inclement weather days will be cancelled.
  • Part of the tour is in an industrial type of environment. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear that can be cleaned. For safety, do not wear open toed shoes.
  • Due to the processes and equipment at the plant, this tour is not suitable for children under age 12.
